Snapchat Announced 1st May no longer be required to hold finger while viewing videos and photos. If you are a regular Snapchat user you know that while watching a video through the app you need to hold your finger on the screen to keep it playing. If the video you are watching is long then you will definitely find this to be tiring. For those of you who do not know the reason why you hold on the screen is to prevent Snapchat from pausing the video and taking a screenshot. However according to Evan Spiegel the CEO at Snapchat, in the near future you may no longer be required to hold your finger on the screen to watch a video. Spiegel talked about this while at an interview that was held at Code conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.
While also viewing your photos through Snapchat one is also required to hold their finger on the screen to prevent the mobile device from taking a screenshot. This mechanism has ensured that those who use Snapchat certainly interact with their photos and videos in order to view them. If Snapchat are going to remove this feature then there is going to be a huge significant change in how Snapchat engages its users. This is because the above feature has ensured that Snapchat’s engagement rates remain up there as this finger holding mechanism is a very important aspect of Snapchat at the moment. When Snapchat tells advertisers that they can make users touch the ads they post it is because of the above mechanism which goes to show that as selling tool, Snapchat is really one of the best.
To change the finger touching mechanism it is most likely that Snapchat will use the mechanism that they applied in another product of theirs, Discover tab. At the same conference Spiegel also talked about how they were watching various apps such as Periscope and Meerkat that provide streaming services and learning from them. He also said that Snapchat has 100 million daily user and that 65% of them come up with content on a daily basis and as result Snapchat are willing to experiment through various things such as Snapchat Discover and various ad formats to grow even further.
In my opinion getting rid of the finger touching mechanism may be of some benefit to the user as now you will no longer get tired while touching the screen especially when watching long videos. However for Snapchat it might lead to a decrease in the profits they make as a result of it.
